AAC and Supporting Autistic Students in School

Communication looks different for every Autistic student. For many, spoken language is not the most accessible or comfortable way to connect with others. Augmentative and Alternative Communication, or AAC, supports Autistic students to communicate in ways that align with their needs, preferences, and autonomy.

AAC in school settings is not only about access to devices or systems. It is about creating environments where all forms of communication are recognised, respected, and responded to. Gestures, visuals, symbols, communication cards, and AAC systems are all valid ways for students to express themselves and engage with others.

The free Autism Visual Greeting Communication Cards support inclusive communication by offering clear, visual options for social interaction such as waving, a thumbs up, a fist bump, or choosing not to engage physically at all. These cards allow students to communicate boundaries, preferences, and greetings without pressure to speak or perform social expectations.

When schools respect AAC and visual communication supports, Autistic students are better supported to participate on their own terms. This is not about teaching students how to fit in. It is about adapting environments so students are understood.

Supporting AAC in school is a neuroaffirmative practice that centres dignity, choice, and communication access for all learners.
